Revealing Attire
So I probably got you with this post title. (Just what are you thinking?) Here’s a character/person building exercise for the day:
Choose a character who is central to your current writing project. Think of a piece of apparel you strongly associate with them. Now grant yourself a bit of research fun, but set a strict time limit because research can become a series of interconnected, never-ending rabbit holes (I’d recommend ten minutes, max). Conduct some research affiliated with this bit of apparel, whatever that may be…history, etymology, usage, origins, designers… You never know where you may go.
Then take some aspect of your research that grabs your attention and apply it to your character in any way you see fit and free-write. Obviously, one end desire is to discover something in the way your character chooses (or is required) to dress as revealing of a larger aspect of their character.
